Indian ex-model Sangeeta Chatterjee survives suicide attempt in prison

HYDERABAD: Former Indian model and air hostess Sangeeta Chatterjee – facing trial in a red sanders smuggling case – on Thursday attempted suicide in a jail in Adhra Pradesh’s Chittoor district.She was rushed to Chittoor Government Hospital after consuming phenyl – kept in detention centre’s toilet – in a botched attempt to commit suicide. The doctors have pronounced her health out of danger.Reportedly distressed over not getting bail, the former model attempted to commit suicide.She was arrested by Indian police in March this year for her involvement in illegal activities. The 26-year-old Sangeeta started out her career as an air hostess and came in contact with Lakhsman – red sanders smuggler – who operates a smuggling network.According to Indian police, the model later married Lakshman and after his arrest, she had taken over control of smuggling network.The erstwhile air hostess is alleged to have expanded the red sanders smuggling network to six states in India and also in other countries, including China and Japan.The gang is allegedly involved in red sanders smuggling from the forests of Chittoor, Kurnool and Kadapa districts of Andhra Pradesh, India.The air hostess-turned-model Sangeeta hails from Kolkata and the second wife of smuggling network chief Lakshman.
