CENTRAL JAVA:  An Indonesian man who claimed to be the world`s oldest man died this week in his village. What`s interesting is the fact that the man was apparently a `heavy smoker` yet lived on for 146 years. Sodimedjo, also known as Mbah Ghoto (Grandpa Ghoto) died this week in his village at Central Java at the age of 146 years. Sodimedjo had outlived four of his wives and was considered to be a heavy smoker. He was taken to the hospital on April 12 as his health deteriorated and died this week in the midst of his family. He was not recognised as the longest living human being since Indonesia started recording births after 1900. However, as per his documents and interviews, his residency card confirmed his birth date. His grandson spoke about his illness as the old man returned to his home to be with his family."It only lasted a couple of days. From that moment on to his death, he refused to eat and drink,” he said. “He didn’t ask much. Before he died, he just wanted us, his family, to let him go."In an interview with an Indonesian newspaper last year, Sodimedjo had stated that he had wanted to die for long."Life is only a matter of accepting your destiny wholeheartedly. I have wanted to die for a long time," he had said.He is survived by an astounding five children, 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.Since his age was not independently verified, Ghoto is not the oldest living human being in history. That record is held by Frenchwoman Jeanne Calment, who died in 1997 aged 122.Currently, the world`s oldest human being alive is a Jamaican woman named Violet Brown who is 117 years-old.
